DSEAR Risk Assessment

DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) assessments are required in UK workplaces handling flammable gases, vapours, mists, dusts, or explosive atmospheres. These assessments instill the ALARP principle, starting with inherent safety, ventilation, ignition control and mitigation. By focusing on both technical and organisational controls, DSEAR risk assessments help protect people (as well as property) from fire, explosion, and related hazards.

Service information

  • Identify oportunities for inherently safer operations through elimination, substitution, or minimisation of hazardous substances, as per Regulation 6 of DSEAR
  • Assess the likelihood of explosive atmospheres forming, including frequency and duration of exposure, taking into account site-specific operations, as per Regulation 5 of DSEAR
  • Examine potential ignition sources — electrical, mechanical, static, hot surfaces — and assess explosion and fire risks
  • Support regulatory compliance with DSEAR 2002, ATEX Directives, BS EN 60079 series, BS EN 1127, and HSE guidance (e.g., HSG 103)
  • Offer practical recommendations for safe working practices, operator awareness, and contractor management
  • Deliver tailored training, toolbox talks, and workshops to raise awareness and embed DSEAR responsibilities across teams
  • Support continuous improvement through periodic DSEAR reviews and site verification
