ALARP Demonstration

The ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) principle ensures that industrial risks are reduced to a level where further measures would be grossly disproportionate to the additional safety benefit. ALARP demonstration balances risk reduction, cost, and effort, helping organisations choose sensible, justifiable controls. This approach underpins major accident hazard regulations and is embedded in frameworks like the UK Health and Safety at Work Act, COMAH Regulations, Offshore Installations (Safety Case) Regulations, Seveso III Directive, HSE HSG 65, ISO 31000, and ISO 45001.

Service information

  • Carry out early-stage optioneering studies to weigh multiple solutions or design alternatives
  • Review compliance with relevant codes, standards, regulations, and good practice guidance
  • Undertake deterministic and probabilistic risk assessments to evaluate risk levels and tolerability
  • Align risk assessments with tolerable risk criteria and individual/societal risk thresholds set by regulators
  • Apply gross-disproportion commensurate to the level of risk (e.g. Gross Disproportion Factor of 1-10)
  • Integrate findings from Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), consequence modelling, and fire/explosion analyses to inform ALARP decisions
  • Apply ALARP principles across the asset lifecycle, including operational procedures, maintenance strategies, and decommissioning plans
  • Provide independent peer reviews, audits, and benchmarking to validate ALARP justifications
  • Prepare clear, auditable ALARP documentation and safety cases for submission to regulatory bodies
  • Facilitate ALARP workshops to ensure transparent, informed and structured choices
  • Establish mechanisms for ongoing ALARP reassessment in response to operational changes, incidents, or new technologies
  • Deliver tailored training and workshops to embed ALARP principles and practice across organisations
